Ancestor Portrait of a Mandarin’s Wife
ca. 1900
The lady in the splendidly decorated robe is identified as the wife of an imperial official of the 4th rank by the square official badge (mandarin square) with a wild goose motif on the front of her stole. The dragon motifs on the red robe and stole represent the imperial house in whose service the consort was. However, the restriction to four dragon claws shows that he did not belong to those directly employed at court, who were permitted to use decorations with five-clawed dragons, as otherwise only the emperor himself.
The carpet under the throne of the official's wife shows various symbols of luck, such as cranes, peaches and bats, which stand for a long life and material happiness.
