The Immortal He Xian’gu
19th century
He Xiangu is one of the Eight Immortals (Baxian) and the only woman in this group. Her attribute is the lotus flower that she is holding here at her side, facing downwards. She is said to have been the daughter of a shopkeeper in the 7th century and to have eaten of the peaches of long life, transforming her into a fairy. She used to wander around the mountains living off powdered pearls and moon beans. When she was called to the court of Empress Wu (625-705), she is said to have disappeared.
