Mountains in the Rain
Huang Yi
19th - 20th century
A quite well painted picture in the style of Mi Fu (1052–1107), in which the mountains are built up from horizontal, very wet ink stains. However, the seal is not genuine. Its quality does not correspond to the other seals of this type by Huang Yi.
Huang Yi, style name Dayi, surnames Xiaosong and Qiu'an, came from Renhe (Hangzhou). He was the son of Huang Shugu. As a civil servant, he was at the same time a calligrapher, painter and seal cutter. Especially landscapes and flowers are known by him.
A large official seal decorated with four Chinese unicorns (qilin) and bearing Huang Yi’s signature was auctioned in November 2011 at the Nagel/Stuttgart auction house.
