Officium B. V. Mariae
1400 - 1420
Apart from the Annunciation to the Shepherds and the Madonna with Child (severely worn) for the prayers to the Virgin Mary in French, all of the manuscript's miniature pages have been lost. This is also the case with the Calendar, whose origin in Reims is not certain due to missing pages. Both miniatures are the same in terms of composition and colouration (green landscape background, orange above the horizon), however they differ slightly in terms of the framing.
A characteristic feature of the miniature of the Annunciation to the Shepherds (fol. 48) is the crass division of the landscape into two. On the right side an iceberg-like rock formation rises steeply towards the apex of the picture. Next to it floats an angel against a geometrically patterned background in cinnabar holding a banderol with the inscription annucio vobis gaudium mag(num) —I announce to you a great joy.”
