Spring landscape with cherry blossom festival
Early Edo period, 17th century
The painted screen depicts the cherry blossom, celebrated enthusiastically in Japan since time immemorial. Either Arashiyama near Kyōto or Yoshino south of Nara is most likely pictured here; both are popular destinations for cherry blossom viewing. The landscape with flowering cherry trees, a stream, and golden clouds extends over all six panels of the nearly four-meter-wide folding screen. Staffage figures bring the scene to life: in the middle left, a group of swimmers; in the foreground, raftsmen, fishermen, and rice farmers at work; in the upper right, wanderers gazing at a waterfall.
The unsigned screen is probably the work of a city painter (machi eshi), perhaps from Kyōto. His style is influenced by the Kanō school and other painting traditions of early modern Japan.
