Sleeping Scholar in a Boat
Qiu Ying
17th century
Qiu Ying's painting is characterised by the detailed depiction of the genre-like scene and the naturalistic, vivid portrayal of figures. He is probably the most popular painter in Chinese art history, and no other painter has been copied and forged so often. For every original work by him, there are hundreds or even thousands of imitations in his style. This painting, too, is a later imitation. Although Qiu Ying was a professional painter who did paintings on commission and was perfectly trained in the academic painting style of the Zhe school, he was also a close member of the circle of literati painters around Wen Zhengming (1470–1559), so that he himself was counted among the 'Four Great Masters of the Wu School'.
This painting is reminiscent of well-known works by Wen Zhengming. The rocks have little structure and are mainly designed as flat patterns with strong contour lines, decoratively decorated in bright blues and greens. The mountains in the background are lined up like flat backdrops, and the trees and earthen plateaus are also flat and appear to have been pressed flat.
