With the development of far trade in the Song dynasty the depiction of travelers on broad roads cutting through the country became a popular subject in painting. Here, in a copy, Liao Yunhe takes up this theme using the style of the monumental mountain landscape of the Song Dynasty. Liao was a well-known landscape painter of the Qing Dynasty. He is said to have been particularly good at painting landscapes in the blue-green, i.e. in the archaic style.
