Book of Hours according to the custom of the Roman Church
Mid 15th century
Before the Calendar is the owner’s coat of arms, the initials “N I” next to a blue escutcheon in front of a crozier. The Annunciation is depicted at the start of the Hours of the Virgin, the Crucifixion at the start of the Hours of the Cross, and David Praying for the Penitential Psalms. Following the Litany and the Office of the Dead, the Book of Hours closes with the commemoratio sce Marie Magdalene, clearly a special wish on the part of the client. Stylistically, the manuscript is similar to another Book of Hours in the collection of the Museum Angewandte Kunst (L.M.26), although the figures are compacter, which is nevertheless common in eastern French illuminations of this time.
