Glass bottle
10th—11th century
This small bottle consists of a flattened ball-shaped body with a long, very thin neck that narrows toward the top. The surface of the vessel is decorated with spiraling single thread of white glass, which, below the shoulder, no longer rests but is instead pressed into the dark glass. Another ingenious detail of this extremely finely crafted, almost thousand-year-old bottle are the tiny eyelet handles at the base of the neck.
The bottle’s shape gives a hint of what it was probably used for: the flat globular body fits perfectly in the hand; the opening is minuscule and allows only the tiniest amounts of a precious liquid, such as perfume or essential oil, to spray out.
