In the chrysanthemum painting, the butterflies are forming a rebus: the Chinese word for butterfly (die) is the homonym for the expression 'very old', '70 or 80 years old' (die). It is therefore a popular symbol for birthday wishes.
Not much is known about Shen Shijie. According to one of his seals, he probably worked as a court painter in Peking during the last years of the Qing dynasty. This flower painting shows the typical courtly style of the time.
