Cubo TS 502
Richard Sapper; Marco Zanuso; Brionvega
1964
The designers Richard Sapper and Marco Zanuso came up with the Brionvega Cubo TS 502 radio. The duo collaborated for many years—from 1958 to 1977—and during the 1960s, they dominated the company’s TV and audio design. Their technically highly innovative devices were successful on the market, despite the steep price tag.
Technology and design are tightly interwoven in the TS 502. The radio consists of two cubes connected by a hinge. When closed, it looks more like a plastic sculpture. Although the handle and antenna are recognizable, they can be retracted discreetly. Only when opened do the other functions of the device become apparent: one cube contains the loudspeakers, the other the controls. The transmission frequency display is a segment of a circle that follows the rotary movement of the knob.
Despite its clean and geometric design, the device does not look cold, but casual and playful. The red plastic casing has a refined sheen and the whole device exudes originality and technical sophistication. What kind of music do you think can be heard from its speakers?
