Book of hours
Jean Bourdichon
1480 - 1490
Following the Calendar, John on Patmos opens the cycle of miniatures which proceeds through the Hours of the Virgin from the Annunciation to the Crowning of Mary. This is followed by the pictures of the Crucifixion and the Pentecost, then the Last Judgement for the Penitential Psalms. The Arrest of Christ illustrates the Passion according to the Gospel of John, the depiction of the Three Kings, who are enthroned in front of a choir of angels, illustrates the Prayers to the Holy Trinity. The nuanced execution of the paintings places the manuscript in the oeuvre of Jean Bourdichon and is considered to be one of his early works. They do not attain the stylistic level of the paintings in his main work, the Grandes Heures of Anne de Bretagne, 1500-1508, although the physiognomy of the figures and the gold highlights point to his main work. The incidental figures in the miniature of the Presentation of Christ clearly display the influence of Jean Fouquet on the work of his student, Bourdichon. The borders and their figures originate from another hand.
