Kitchen tree
Stefan Wewerka; Tecta, Lauenförde
1984
A chrome-plated steel column housing cables and water pipes surrounded by everything you need in a kitchen: an electric stove, a sink, work surface, and dish rack as well as hooks for hanging pots or tea towels. There is even a spice rack. The arrangement of the functional elements can be adapted to individual preferences.
Stefan Wewerka’s Kitchen tree, a series production, is all about movement. The design focuses less on the workspace and more on workflow, the dynamic motions of the user: a concentric circling around the objects of daily use. At once experiment and everyday implement, the Kitchen tree, like many of Wewerka’s designs, moves between architecture, art, and design. The designer gained recognition for his deformed chair sculptures which demand mental agility: although recognizable as chairs, they are not usable as such, for it is impossible to sit comfortably on their steeply sloping seats. In his chair sculptures, Wewerka has made the relationship between the applied and liberal arts visible.
