Sheet with illuminated initial from a choir book
Mid 15th century
The V initial opens the responsory, the ante noc (before the nocturn), sung with psalm and hymn: “Videntes joseph a longe loquebantur mutuo tres dicentes ecce somniator venit—When they saw Joseph, of whom they had long spoken, the three [brothers] spoke to one-another: Look, there comes the dreamer.” It describes and illustrates chapter thirty seven of Genesis that tells of how Joseph was thrown into the pit by his brothers and later sold to the Ishmaelites.
