Enamelled fitting in the shape of a Latin cross
ca. 1200
This enameled fitting in the shape of a Latin cross once adorned the intersection of a larger processional cross (see Museum Angewandte Kunst, inv. no. 5874). Small holes on the edges were used to attach it with nails. The dark-blue enameled cross is decorated with multicolored rosettes and small medallions in yellow, green, blue, and red. A second crucifix is depicted on the fitting, from which the gilded bronze figure of a crucified Christ stands out in relief. He wears a loincloth, his head is tilted to one side, and his eyes are closed. His halo (nimbus) is integrated into the enamel fitting, above which is his monogram (“IHS”) and the hand of God blessing and pointing to Christ.
The crucifix reflects a development in the Limousin enamel workshops shortly before 1200: instead of creating figures from enamel on the image carrier, artists now created small sculptures (en ronde-bosse), which they cast, engraved, gilded, and partially enameled. A similar figure of Christ can be found on the front of a reliquary from the late twelfth century in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. OA 6183).
