Bowl with depiction of birds
10. - 11. Jahrhundert
The painting and surface coating of the deep bowl with a high circular base have flaked off or faded in many places on the outer wall. The inside of the bowl features a circular motif in the center, from which broad, flowing brushstrokes lead to the rim of the bowl. The composition divides the surface into three oval areas. In each of these fields, the silhouette of a simple bird looking to the left can be seen. The background is enlivened by brown, shimmering dots and individual dabs of green paint in varying intensities. The vibrant painting makes the birds appear to circle around the center of the bowl.
Similar ornamentation is often found on archaeological finds from Iran. The patterns are characterized by symmetrical painting and follow a clear principle: they unfold harmoniously from the center of the bowl.
