Horae B.V. Mariae Secundum Usum Ecclesiae Romanae
1480 - 1490
The Book of Hours opens with a family coat of arms as well as a Calendar whose pages are also framed by vine foliage. Two tondi with the corresponding sign of the zodiac and the month’s activity are added to the borders for each respective month. The Hours of the Cross and the Hours of the Pentecost, with the usual pictures, are followed by the picture of the donor kneeling before Mary for the Confessio ante missam. The Hours of the Virgin is illustrated by the cycle of pictures from the Annunciation to the Flight into Egypt. The Obsecro te is followed by the Psalter (Hieronymous), the Hours of the Virgin for Advent (Crowning of Mary), the seven Penitential Psalms (David Praying), the Litany and the Office of the Dead with a picture of a burial. Rosy Schilling attributes the miniatures to the circle of the Master of the Dresden Prayer Book (cf. ibid. and Georg Swarzenski, Illuminierte Handschriften und Einzelminiaturen des Mittelalters und der Renaissance in Frankfurter Besitz, Frankfurt am Main 1929, p. 170ff.). Typologically, the Calendar figures are comparable to those of a manuscript in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (Ms. Ludwig IX 8 / 83.ML.104), attributed to Willem Vrelant.
