Peaks and Gorges of the Huangshan
Zhao Zuo
17th century or later
Zhao Zuo is considered the leading figure of the so-called Su Song School, in which stylistic elements of the Wu School from Suzhou and the Songjiang School, founded by Dong Qichang, merge. Soft, lyrical landscapes are juxtaposed with high-contrast, cubist rocks, whose strong chiaroscuro may reflect the influence of Western printmaking. The Frankfurt scroll is not an original work by Zhao Zuo. The somewhat coarse brushstrokes and other imperfections indicate that it is probably a later copy. Nevertheless, it gives an impression of the new expressive landscape style in the late Ming dynasty.
