Bowl with stripes
13th century
The reassembled, partially restored deep bowl rests on a tall circular base. The transparent glaze drips thickly down the foot and, due to prolonged storage in the ground, has developed a crusted surface known as sintering. The design features alternating, painted black and cobalt blue stripes that radiate toward a blue circle in the center. This circle was drawn at a distance from the center of the bowl, which is further emphasized by a painted blue dot. The striped pattern ends at the circle and does not reach the center, thus avoiding an irregular meeting of the stripes.
The simple yet careful design testifies to the refined instincts for harmonious and balanced patterns of the potters of Kashan, a stronghold of Islamic ceramic production at that time.
