Sheet with illuminated initial from a choir book
Coldiradi Baldassare
1470 - 1480
This illuminated manuscript page on parchment comes from a late medieval choir book. The Latin text in rotunda script and the square notation of the notes indicate its use in Christian liturgy. At the bottom left, an ornamental L-initial frames a miniature depicting Saint Lucia. In her left hand she holds a palm branch, in her right a tray with two eyeballs. Two legends surround her, to which the cruel depiction alludes: according to one story, she gouged out her own eyes to escape marriage to a pagan. According to another, she lost her sight during her martyrdom.
Art historian Beatrice Alai attributed this painting to the illuminator Baldassare Coldiradi, who lived in the late fifteenth century. She also ascribed the sheet with the inventory number L.M.69 to this artist.
Both individual sheets became part of the Linel Collection in 1921 and were transferred to what was then the Museum of Arts and Crafts (now the Museum Angewandte Kunst). There they served as models for artists and craftspeople, especially in the fields of ornamentation and calligraphy.
