Frankfurt Lantern
Kai Linke; Bureau Sandra Doeller; Behinderten-Werk Main-Kinzig
2025
To mark the 100th anniversary of the New Frankfurt, Frankfurt-based designer Kai Linke was commissioned by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), the Museum Angewandte Kunst, and the City of Frankfurt to design a special lantern. Inspired by the first lantern festival in 1931, the lantern festivals will return from 2025 to 2030 to the New Frankfurt housing developments. For this occasion, the lantern pictured here will be used to create a festive atmosphere bridging the past and the present. The three-part assembly kit is available with a white shade or the graphic pattern designed by Sandra Doeller for the 100 Years of the New Frankfurt campaign and can be easily assembled for festivals in the city’s housing estates. Easy-to-follow instructions are provided on the packaging: “Carefully unfold the shade. Insert the plate into the shade from below. Connect the lantern to an E27 screw socket or hang it from an E27 string of lights using the wire bracket.”
Other partners in the 100 Years of the New Frankfurt campaign include World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026, the Historisches Museum, the Institut für Stadtgeschichte, the Jüdisches Museum, the ernst-may-gesellschaft, and the Martin-Elsaesser-Stiftung.
