Book of hours for the use of Paris
um 1400
The manuscript contains the Penitential Psalms, the Litany of the Saints, the officium de sancta cruce, the requim (pro defunctis), nine lessons, then the beginnings of the Gospels, the prayers Obsecro te and O Intemerata, as well as the Hours of the Passion of Christ (hore devotissime de passione domini) and concludes with prayers to individual saints. One miniature respectively introduces the Penitential Psalms, the Hours of the Cross, and the Office of the Dead.
Both the finely branching vines with their characteristic three-fingered leaves growing out of the plain sides of the frame (cf. the Boucicaut Book of Hours), together with the style and composition of the pictures, point to the immediate circle around the workshop of the Boucicaut Master, named after the Book of Hours which this outstanding artist completed for Jean I Le Meingre, Maréchal de France, named Boucicaut, between 1401 and 1408.
In comparison to the works from this workshop, this Book of Hours displays extremely sparing and sparse vines, combined with a meticulously precise execution of both the ornamental sections and the figures.
