Book of hours according to the custom of the Roman church
Willem Vrelant
1470 - 1480
The Calendar and prayers of Saint Gregory are followed by the Hours of the Virgin with eight miniatures from the Annunciation of Mary (officium nocturnum) to the Flight into Egypt (Compline). This is followed by an officium Mariae … per totum adventum (Crowning of Mary) and the missa b. Marie (Madonna with Child), followed by an Hours of the Cross (Crucifixion) and Hours of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost). This continues with the Penitential Psalms (David Praying), Vigils for the Dead (The Awakening of Lazarus), nine lessons, prayers to the Virgin Mary, the Psalter of Saint Hieronymous with a picture of his stigmatization, prayers and eight versicles of Saint Bernhard.
The manuscript originates from the circle around Willem Vrelant, master of a workshop in Bruges which produced numerous Books of Hours in the period after 1450. A characteristic feature of the painting style of this workshop are the clear and bright, graphically configured pictures, whose complex depth of spatial gradation is not fully developed in the Frankfurt example. Its borders essentially accord with those of the Vrelant workshop. Fine branching tendrils ending in small knots contrast with fleshy acanthus leaves rendered in strong local colours which are boldly curved and decorated with rows of white points. The Frankfurt manuscript stands out due to the relatively dense structure of tendrils and individual plants, which under a number of miniatures grow out of clods of earth.
