Book of Hours according to the custom of the Roman Church
1st half 16th century
The manuscript was originally in the possession of the Duc de Saint-Aignan, then the Duke of Hamilton, and was purchased in 1888 by Wilhelm Peter Metzler before it entered the collection of the museum of applied arts. A striking feature of the miniatures are the borders with their elements in imitation of classical antiquity arranged between naturalistic plants and animal motifs. These are reminiscent of the Ghislieri Book of Hours (London, British Library, Yates Thompson 29), especially the miniatures executed by Matteo da Milano (active 1492–1523).
