Book of hours according to the custom of the Roman Church
End 15th century
Following the Calendar, the manuscript contains the Hours of the Virgin, the Penitential Psalms and the Litany. The illuminated double page at the beginning of the Hours of the Virgin depicts the Annunciation of Mary, and in the initial D opposite, Madonna and Child in half-length figure. The correspondingly arranged double-page prior to the Penitential Psalms, shows David with the head of Goliath and the aged David playing the lyre. Six or four medallions with the heads of saints are inserted in the vine scroll borders against a gold or red background. Rosy Schilling attributed the miniatures to the circle around the Florentine miniaturist Attavante (1452—ca. 1520, cf. ibid. and Georg Swarzenski, Illuminierte Handschriften und Einzelminiaturen des Mittelalters und der Renaissance in Frankfurter Besitz, Frankfurt am Main 1929, p. 253f.).
