Book of hours according to the custom of Paris
1430 - 1445
The manuscript consists of the Calendar, the sequence of the Four Gospels (John on Patmos), prayers to the Virgin Mary and the Hours of the Virgin with pictures from the Annunciation to the Crowning of Mary (Compline). This is followed by the Penitential Psalms (David Praying), the Litany of the Saints, the Hours of the Cross (Crucifixion of Christ), and the Vigils for the Dead. The manuscript, which was probably produced shortly after 1450, corresponds to Books of Hours from eastern France with respect to the arrangement of the miniatures and their borders. It can be compared to the manuscript produced in Rouen “former Korner no. 60” (cf. Medieval Illuminated Miniatures from the Collection of The Late Eric Korner, auction catalogue, Sotheby’s, London 1990, no. 33).
The miniature of the Adoration of the Magi for the Sext stands out from the cycle. It lacks, as does the picture of the Annunciation, the characteristic division of the frame into floral bars with a gold background and those with a geometric pattern. The figures are also distinct. At least two hands were responsible for the figures in the book. Mary’s bed with the red bed cover and pillow frequently appears in manuscripts from Paris (cf. Roger S. Wieck, The Book of Hours in Medieval Art and Life, London 1988, p. 85).
