Decorative plate in quatrefoil shape, fitting from a reliquary
14th century
The quatrefoil enamel fitting depicts a kneeling angel. The figure holds a ribbon (phylactery) bearing the inscription “MATEU,” which also appears at the bottom of the fitting. The evangelist Matthew is represented here by his symbol, the angel. The piece probably belonged to a group of four fittings that also featured the symbols of the evangelists Mark (lion), Luke (bull), and John (eagle).
The piece raises questions about its date, origin, and function. The quatrefoil shape was already a popular design element for reliquaries in many parts of Europe in the twelfth century, including Limoges. With its four mounting holes, the fitting resembles, however, four enamel plates dating from the fourteenth or early fifteenth century, which probably originate from Catalonia (Musée de Cluny, Paris, inv. no. Cl. 14708 a-d). These also have holes at their four ends and were apparently attached to the arms of a cross.
The Spanish version of the name Matthew on the inscriptions supports the assumption of a Catalan origin. A similar Catalan cross can be found in the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid (inv. no. CE00561). In addition, this piece probably comes from the same artistic milieu as an enameled processional cross from Catalonia in the British Museum in London (inv. no. 1895, 1225.1).
