Book of Hours of Belondo Biaxo, according to the custom of the Roman Church
Henricus Amsterdamnus; Belondo de St. Biaxio
ca. 1470
Following the Calendar, the manuscript contains the Hours of the Virgin, a special Office for the first Saturday of Advent, Penitential Psalms and Litany, Office of the Dead, a short and an extensive Hours of the Cross. Prayers to the Saints and a section on Mary Magdalene complete the manuscript. The Calendar is preceded by an inscription from the owner expressing the hope that the manuscript, initiated by him, may bring consolation to subsequent owners and provide occasion for them to pray to God. Furthermore, the scribe, namely Henricus Amsterdamnus alias Senza paura, is also named. He was the main scribe for the choir books at S. Petronio in Bologna, and the miniatures in the Book of Hours are also to be seen in connection with its main master, Martino da Modena († 1489), who was a miniature painter in Ferrara and important son of Giorgio d’Alemagna (ca. 1450).
