Sheet with illuminated initial from an antiphonary
ca. 1300
The initial opens the section of text for the office of the 2nd feriae, in which God’s mercy is called for in light of the internecine battle being waged between men: “Miserere mihi domine quoniam conculcavitor homo tota die belans tribulavit me—Have pity on me, O Lord, for the afflictions suffered at the hands of the people in their continual battles. The initial is on a gold ground and in a rectangular frame. Integrated into the letter is a church-like building with round-arches and a pointed gable in which the crowned David is kneeling in prayer to God the Father who appears as a half-length figure offering his blessing. The figures, as well as the plain architecture, which opens up little space, still lack the impulses of the Italian painting of the Trecento, as initiated by Duccio (ca. 1255–1318/19).
