Tea bowl
Mid Edo, 18th century
The bowl made of buff stoneware with a finely crazed celadon glaze was produced in the Japanese city of Karatsu, an important center of ceramic production since the Momoyama period (1573–1603). On its modern wooden storage box, the bowl is attributed to the Shiinomine-gama workshop and is labeled as a muji Karatsu chawan (literally “patternless Karatsu tea bowl”). This term clearly distinguishes the piece from the more common e-karatsu (“painted karatsu”) ceramic which was painted with a design, often floral, under the transparent glaze. Another special feature can be seen on the lip of the bowl, where there is an area of gold lacquer repair (kintsugi), on which a fine wave pattern had been inscribed. On the opposite side, another small area has been repaired with gold lacquer.
