Tile
19th century
The square tile glows in many colors. It comprises a framing pattern and a figurative element in the center. The lower half is embellished with a red and blue floral band, accentuated by green details. On the upper half, a face appears, outlined in black contours and only half visible. Curved eyebrows and stylized turquoise and red flames surround it. Angular, turquoise and blue borders, with truncated floral motifs visible at their upper edges, frame the face. The floral decoration in the lower section is reminiscent of Chinese “Famille rose” porcelain, which was influenced by European porcelain. This porcelain captivates with its delicate color gradations and floral patterns.
The half-visible face resembles a rising sun, a traditional motif in Persian art. Originally, it was always depicted together with a lion—the symbol of the constellation Leo. Under the Qajar dynasty in the nineteenth century, it became the coat of arms of the ruling family and adorned coins and other objects.
