Flowers and Butterflies
Yun Bing
Beginning 19th century
Yun Bing was a descendant of the most important flower painter of the Qing dynasty, Yun Shouping (1633–1690) and successfully continued his tradition. Her painting style, which ultimately dates back to the Song period (960–1279), was characterized by a naturalistic depiction of flowers and insects, painted in ink without contour lines and only with delicate coloured lavis in the so-called 'boneless style' (mogu fa). From an early age, Yun Bing contributed to the family's livelihood with her painting, and her descendants continued this artistic tradition.
The Frankfurt album must also be attributed to the later Yun family. Like small nature studies, the charming compositions often show simple flowers growing in the grass and between stones, surrounded by colourful butterflies. However, the colours appear more intense and the compositions more two-dimensional than in Yun Bing's original work.
