iMac G3 Strawberry
Jonathan Ive; Apple Computer Inc.
1997 - 1998
That a computer does not have to look like a technical laboratory device was proven by Apple with the presentation of the iMac designed by Jonathan Ive (born 1967) in 1998. In contrast to the austere, beige-colored towers typical of computers of that time, the iMac featured a rounded case made of colorful, translucent plastic elements. The shape and color radiate friendliness and playfulness. The aim was to take away users’ fear of technology. The iMac was designed not only to lighten the atmosphere in offices, but also to establish itself as a lifestyle product in the home environment. Inspired by Dieter Rams (born 1932), who was head of design at the electrical appliance manufacturer Braun for many years, Ive focused on clear forms and ease of use. The colorful, playful iMac broke, however, with Rams’ sober and technology-oriented designs. The semi-transparent material, which allows a glimpse inside the device, remains true to Rams’ principle of hiding nothing.
