Business card Philipp Albinus
Philipp Albinus
ca. 1927
The accomplished book printer and advocate of the “New Typography,” Philipp Albinus (1884–1957) influenced typographic innovation in the 1920s in the context of modern design in the New Frankfurt movement.
His personal business card, designed in 1927 at the latest, features a black, slightly squat triangle centered on the card, which counterbalances the generous white space. Albinus printed the triangle using typefaces typical of the time consisting of geometric shapes that supplement the text with constructive elements. For the font, he chose a bold Reform Grotesk, issued by D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt, where he worked from 1911 to 1922. He arranged the three text elements along the three sides of the triangle. He wrote an umlaut in his address as “oe” and gave the house number as “No. 4,” apparently to extend the line to the required width. The sophistication of the design lies in the two diagonal lines of text. Since lead typesetting in its rectangular form dictates horizontal lines, such deviations from the right angle required considerable craftsmanship.
