Klingspor calendar for 1926
Gebr. Klingspor; Rudolf Koch; Heinrich Holz
1926
The Klingspor Brothers type foundry in Offenbach published, like many of its competitors, calendars each year to showcase its craftsmanship. The Klingspor calendar for 1926 is a particularly carefully designed and elaborately produced example of printing.
The thread-bound booklet contains, in addition to a calendar, explanations of the origins of the names of the months, an overview of church holidays and name days, and shows the phases of the moon. The two-page spreads for each month also feature short texts describing the range of services offered by the Klingspor brothers. A poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) appears at the end of each quarter, illustrated with multicolored woodcuts by the Offenbach painter and graphic artist Heinrich Holz (1890–1927). These prints were created using a sophisticated process in which each color was precisely aligned and applied to the handmade paper. The work is accompanied by several aphorisms by Goethe.
At the same time, the Klingspor Calendar serves as a type specimen: It was set in two colors in the Klingspor typeface, which is known today as Wilhelm Klingspor Gothic. The type designer Rudolf Koch (1876–1934) worked on the design for several years before the typeface was released in 1925. It was named in honor of Wilhelm Klingspor (1871–1925), who died the same year. A special feature of this slender, blackletter typeface is the varying widths of the individual letter variants, which can be flexibly adapted to the respective text layout.
