"You shouldn’t read while driving!"—This sentence characterizes Almir Mavignier’s ideal poster: minimal content and nonrepresentational color compositions with op-art effects of maximum contrast.
Mavignier’s so-called Additive Posters, which advertise his exhibitions—here at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in 2004—were created based on the laws of perception. Their pictorial qualities are intended to have an effect rather than the information they contain. Their intense color vibrations attempt to visually captivate passersby in the urban space, enticing them to take a closer look. The font—rarely larger than 12 point—almost disappears due to its glossy transparency. Mavignier thus transforms the information in the poster into an abstract language of images that tends toward geometric ornamentation.
Because Mavignier’s Additive Posters and their nonrepresentational formal language know no top or bottom, they can be arranged like a pattern repeat (linking pattern). In this way, they have the potential to take up as much space as possible in the city to promote his art.
